Social Nomads Impact Trips

1. Organiser

Social Nomads is an initiative of 22STARS, a business registered in the Netherlands under Chamber of Commerce (KVK) number 53768108.

22STARS originally developed around its social jewellery activities and also organises a small number of carefully curated Social Nomads Impact Trips, generally one or two experiences per year.

All Impact Trip bookings are made with 22STARS. Payments for participation are made to 22STARS, and 22STARS is the contracting party for Participants.

The 22STARS Foundation (Stichting 22STARS) is a legally separate nonprofit organisation. The Foundation does not sell, organise or provide the Impact Trip and is not a party to the booking agreement.

The Impact Trips connect Participants with communities and programmes associated with the work of the 22STARS Foundation and its Ugandan partner organisations. As part of the social-impact model, 22STARS may make financial contributions to the Foundation, its programmes and participating communities.

22STARS works with independent local partners and third-party suppliers for elements such as accommodation, transport and activities.

By confirming your booking and paying the required deposit, you confirm that you have read, understood and accepted these Booking Terms & Conditions. In these Terms, you are referred to as the Participant.

2. Application and booking confirmation

Social Nomads Impact Trips are intentionally kept small and participation is subject to availability and confirmation by 22STARS.

Submitting an application does not automatically guarantee a place.

After receiving your application, 22STARS will review the information provided and may arrange a short video call to get to know you, answer questions and ensure that the experience is a suitable fit.

A booking is confirmed only after 22STARS has accepted the Participant and received the required deposit.

22STARS reserves the right to decline an application where it reasonably believes participation would not be suitable for the individual, the group, the programme or the communities involved.

3. Minimum age and participant suitability

Participants must normally be at least 18 years old.

Participants under 18 may only participate with prior written approval from 22STARS and when accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other responsible adult authorised to accompany them.

Participants are responsible for ensuring that they are physically and mentally able to participate in the planned activities.

You must inform 22STARS before departure of any medical condition, disability, allergy, dietary requirement or other circumstance that may reasonably affect your participation or require additional arrangements.

22STARS will aim to accommodate reasonable individual needs where possible but cannot guarantee that every accommodation, activity or destination will be suitable or accessible for every Participant.

4. Travel and health insurance

Comprehensive travel and health insurance is mandatory for all Participants.

Proof of valid insurance may be requested before departure.

Participants are responsible for ensuring that their insurance provides appropriate coverage for Uganda and for the activities they intend to undertake.

Coverage should include, where applicable:

emergency medical treatment
accident and illness
emergency evacuation and repatriation
personal liability
loss or theft of personal belongings
travel cancellation or interruption

Participants planning to take part in optional or adventure activities must ensure that these activities are covered by their policy.

Travel cancellation insurance is strongly recommended.

5. Prices, deposit and payment

The applicable Impact Trip price and included services are stated on the Social Nomads website and/or individual booking confirmation.

A non-refundable deposit of €250 per Participant is required to secure a confirmed place.

Unless otherwise agreed in writing, the remaining balance must be received no later than three months before the Impact Trip start date.

For bookings made within three months of departure, full payment may be required upon confirmation.

Failure to pay by the applicable deadline may result in cancellation of the booking. Applicable cancellation charges may still apply.

Payment instructions and accepted payment methods will be communicated by 22STARS.

6. Discounts and promotions

Early Bird prices, private offers, promotional rates and other discounts are subject to the conditions and deadlines communicated at the time of booking.

Discounts cannot normally be combined or retrospectively applied to an existing confirmed booking unless explicitly agreed by 22STARS.

7. Cancellation by the Participant

All cancellations must be submitted to 22STARS in writing.

The €250 booking deposit is non-refundable.

The following cancellation charges apply:

More than 60 days before departure: deposit only
60 to 31 days before departure: 50% of the total Impact Trip price
30 to 15 days before departure: 75% of the total Impact Trip price
14 days or less before departure: 100% of the total Impact Trip price

Where the amount already paid exceeds the applicable cancellation charge, the remaining balance will be refunded.

Participants are strongly advised to obtain travel cancellation insurance covering circumstances that may prevent them from participating.

8. Minimum participant numbers

Because Social Nomads Impact Trips are small-group experiences involving significant advance preparation and community activities, a minimum number of confirmed Participants may be required for an Impact Trip to proceed.

Where a minimum number applies, this will be communicated before booking.

If the required minimum is not reached, 22STARS may cancel the Impact Trip. Participants will be informed as early as reasonably possible.

In this situation, Participants will be offered either:

transfer of payments to another available Impact Trip, or
a refund of payments made to 22STARS for the cancelled Impact Trip.

22STARS is not responsible for independently booked flights, accommodation, visas, vaccinations, insurance or other external costs, except where required by applicable law.

Participants are therefore strongly advised to use flexible or refundable arrangements where possible and to maintain appropriate travel insurance.

9. Itinerary and programme changes

The published itinerary represents the planned experience but should not be considered a rigid schedule.

Social Nomads Impact Trips are intentionally personal and flexible. Community schedules, school activities, weather, road conditions, local events, supplier availability and unexpected opportunities may require changes to the programme.

22STARS therefore reserves the right to make reasonable changes to the itinerary, accommodation, transport, activities or timing where necessary.

Reasonable efforts will be made to maintain the overall character and quality of the Impact Trip and to provide suitable alternatives where appropriate.

Flexibility and openness to local circumstances are an inherent part of participating in an Impact Trip.

10. Cancellation or significant changes by 22STARS

If 22STARS is required to cancel or significantly alter an Impact Trip for reasons within its reasonable control, Participants will be informed as soon as reasonably possible.

Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, Participants may be offered an alternative experience, transfer to another available date or a refund of amounts paid to 22STARS for services that will not be provided.

11. Force majeure and extraordinary circumstances

22STARS may change, suspend or cancel an Impact Trip where circumstances beyond its reasonable control make the experience unsafe, impossible or materially impracticable.

These circumstances may include natural disasters, extreme weather, epidemics or pandemics, war, terrorism, civil unrest, government actions or restrictions, border closures, strikes, significant transport disruption or other extraordinary events.

The rights and obligations of both parties in such circumstances will be determined in accordance with applicable law and the particular circumstances.

22STARS is not responsible for consequential costs such as independently booked flights or additional accommodation except where required by applicable law.

12. Passports, visas and entry requirements

Participants are responsible for ensuring that they hold all documentation required to enter and travel within Uganda, including a valid passport and any required visa or entry authorisation.

Participants are also responsible for checking vaccination, health and entry requirements applicable to their nationality and individual circumstances.

22STARS may share general practical information but does not provide immigration or medical advice and cannot guarantee that requirements will remain unchanged.

Failure to obtain required documentation or satisfy entry requirements does not automatically entitle a Participant to a refund outside the cancellation provisions of these Terms.

13. Health, safety and travel advice

Participants are responsible for reviewing current government travel advice and consulting an appropriate healthcare professional or travel clinic regarding vaccinations, medication and other health precautions.

Travel in Uganda may involve standards of infrastructure, transport, accommodation, hygiene and medical facilities that differ from those in a Participant's home country.

Participants must follow reasonable safety instructions provided by 22STARS, local hosts and relevant third-party providers.

14. Third-party suppliers

22STARS works with independent accommodation providers, transport providers, activity operators and other local partners to deliver elements of the Impact Trip.

22STARS takes reasonable care when selecting and coordinating these suppliers.

Individual services or activities may also be subject to the provider's own terms, operating conditions and safety requirements.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability or consumer right that cannot legally be excluded or limited.

15. Optional activities

Activities that are not expressly included in the confirmed Impact Trip programme are optional and may be provided by independent third parties.

Participation is voluntary.

Participants are responsible for determining whether an optional activity is suitable for them and whether their travel insurance provides appropriate coverage.

Optional activities are normally paid directly to the relevant provider unless otherwise stated.

16. Participant conduct

Impact Trips involve close interaction with local communities, children, families, entrepreneurs, team members and fellow Participants.

Participants are expected to behave respectfully and to follow reasonable guidance relating to safety, safeguarding, cultural sensitivity and community engagement.

Participants must respect local laws, customs, privacy and personal boundaries.

Illegal drug use is prohibited. Alcohol must be consumed responsibly and must not interfere with the safety, comfort or wellbeing of others.

22STARS reserves the right to remove a Participant from an activity or, in serious circumstances, from the remainder of the Impact Trip where their behaviour creates a safety risk, materially disrupts the group, violates local law, breaches safeguarding expectations or seriously disrespects community members, team members or other Participants.

Additional accommodation, transport or onward travel required as a result of such removal will normally be the Participant's responsibility, subject to applicable law.

17. Community engagement and safeguarding

The dignity, privacy, safety and wellbeing of the children, families and communities encountered during the Impact Trip always take priority over the visitor experience.

Participants must follow the safeguarding and community-engagement guidance provided by 22STARS and the relevant Ugandan teams.

Participants must not independently:

give money directly to children or families
distribute gifts without coordination with the team
make promises of financial support
collect private contact information from children
arrange independent visits with beneficiaries
initiate private sponsorship or support arrangements
publish sensitive personal information about community members

without prior agreement from the appropriate 22STARS or local programme representative.

Participants who wish to bring gifts, make additional contributions or support someone they meet should discuss this with the team so that support can be coordinated responsibly and fairly.

18. Social impact contributions

The Impact Trip is a commercial experience provided by 22STARS.

The 22STARS Foundation is a separate nonprofit organisation and is not the seller or provider of the Impact Trip.

As part of the Social Nomads impact model, 22STARS allocates part of the revenue generated by each Impact Trip towards social impact in Uganda.

This may include:

financial contributions to programmes of the 22STARS Foundation
community meals and celebrations
purchases from local entrepreneurs and small businesses
fair compensation for Ugandan team members and community participants involved in the experience
locally sourced products and services
other community-related costs associated with the Impact Trip

The amount and allocation may vary between Impact Trips depending on group size, programme requirements and local circumstances.

Any amount described on the Social Nomads website as a contribution, allocation or amount “going back” to the communities represents expenditure or contributions made by the 22STARS business as part of its social-impact model. It is not a charitable donation made by the Participant to Stichting 22STARS and does not entitle the Participant to a charitable donation receipt or tax deduction.

Participants wishing to make a separate charitable donation may do so directly to the 22STARS Foundation under the Foundation's own donation terms.

19. Photography, video and social media

Photography and filming must respect the dignity, privacy and wishes of community members.

Participants must follow photography and social-media guidance provided by 22STARS and the local teams, particularly where children are involved.

22STARS may take photographs and video during the Impact Trip for documentation and communications purposes. Participants will be informed about this and can communicate if they do not wish to appear in promotional material.

Any use of Participant images will be handled in accordance with applicable privacy law.

Participants may use their own photographs for personal, non-commercial purposes provided that such use respects safeguarding requirements and the privacy and dignity of the people depicted.

Commercial use requires prior written permission.

20. Baggage and personal property

Participants are responsible for their own baggage, valuables and personal belongings.

Participants are advised to keep valuables secure and maintain appropriate insurance against loss, theft or damage.

Liability for personal property remains subject to applicable law.

21. What is not included

Unless explicitly stated otherwise in the booking confirmation, the Impact Trip price does not include:

international flights
visas and entry costs
vaccinations or medical expenses
travel and health insurance
personal expenses
meals and drinks not specified as included
optional activities
gratuities
accommodation or travel before or after the confirmed Impact Trip programme

22. Complaints

If a problem arises during the Impact Trip, Participants should inform a member of the 22STARS team as soon as reasonably possible so that there is an opportunity to address it during the experience.

Any unresolved complaint should be submitted in writing after completion of the Impact Trip, preferably within 30 days, together with relevant information.

Nothing in this provision limits statutory consumer rights or mandatory legal time limits.

23. Communication

22STARS will communicate with Participants primarily using the email address and contact information supplied during the application and booking process.

Participants are responsible for ensuring their details remain accurate and for reviewing important pre-departure communications.

22STARS may also create a private group communication channel for Participants before and during the Impact Trip.

24. Privacy and personal data

22STARS processes personal information required to administer applications and bookings, coordinate the Impact Trip, communicate with Participants and meet legitimate operational, safety and legal requirements.

Personal data will be handled in accordance with applicable privacy legislation and the relevant Privacy Policy.

Where necessary for delivery of the Impact Trip, relevant information may be shared with trusted local partners or service providers, including providers located in Uganda.

Health or other sensitive information will only be processed where necessary and in accordance with applicable law.

25. Limitation of liability

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where exclusion or limitation is prohibited by applicable law.

Subject to applicable law, 22STARS is not responsible for losses resulting from circumstances outside its reasonable control, independently arranged services, or a Participant's failure to comply with these Terms, applicable law, entry requirements or reasonable safety instructions.

Participants remain responsible for obtaining appropriate insurance against reasonably insurable travel risks.

26. Applicable law and disputes

These Booking Terms & Conditions and the agreement between the Participant and 22STARS are governed by Dutch law.

Any dispute will be submitted to the competent court in the Netherlands in accordance with applicable Dutch and European law.

Nothing in these Terms deprives a consumer of mandatory rights or protections available under applicable consumer law.

27. Changes to these Terms

22STARS may update these Booking Terms & Conditions from time to time.

The Terms applicable to a Participant are the version provided or made available when their booking is confirmed, unless a later change is required by law or expressly agreed between the parties.
